Need To Beat Boredom and Rain

July 30, 2009 by Mary

Yesterday Candace, my running buddy, called and informed me she had started running again and we would be starting together at 7 am. When I woke up at 9:30 I realized something had gone wrong. After I fully woke myself up I realized it was raining. Again. Like me Candace doesn’t run in (heavy) rain. The rain thwarted my couch to 5k plans again. But like last time I’m hoping the rain will give me a break this afternoon so I can get my workout in. Crossing my fingers, even though the forecast says rain for the next week especially on the days when I want to run outside. Awesome!

The rain is not only ruining my workout plans, but ALL my plans. Yesterday I was brainstorming ways to get out of the house (I’m currently car less) and decided I would walk the 4-5ish miles to the library/store/etc. I want to make sure I don’t spend all my time stuck inside sitting around and eating too much. (It happens.) Thanks to the rain my plans to do anything are not happening.

This is not a good thing people. My sitting around without much to do is horrible for me because when I don’t have something to focus my energy on it tends to go towards food. This only seems to happen at my family’s home. Anywhere else I manage to find things to do, but here my brain is so twisted and programmed that half the time it leads me to the kitchen without my knowing it. This place is toxic for me in more ways than I can even tell you, and adding boredom to the mix could be my downfall.

Boredom.  Boredom.  With all the cool stuff in my possession and access to satelite tv and internet, I wonder how I can even possibly claim boredom.  Normally I would read a book, but I’ve finished and sold all of my books away (hence the need for a library trip).  Then we have a workout dvd, which only lasts so long.  As does blogging.  I can only watch so much tv without my head exploding.  So even despite all this I end up with a huge chunk of the day where all my responsible friends and family are in school or working.  I’m trying to make a list of things I can do with my time that are different and exciting so they will keep my attention.  If you have any suggestions let me know, I’ve got a month of time to fill.

Oh also, and check out this video of me on Workout Mommy’s blog! I did pushups in the middle of BlogHer!  Apparently Lisa can get me to do anything.  I mentioned I was bored on Twitter and she gave me orders to do 15 flights of stairs, which I did.

    I hear ya with the boredom… I have one more month for school to start and the job that I applied for is not interviewing till Mid August. The kitchen has become my new best friend . . . no good!

    Hang in there, I know boredom can be a killer! Major props for how hard you’ve been working on fighting the rain.

    I can really sympathize! When we moved earlier this year and I didn’t have internet access for over a month, I checked out and started drinking coffee and smoking again. So, find something quickly!

    Are you in between jobs? Or mayby you don’t like me asking you this so in that case: don’t answer.

    Being bored is terrible. Fortunately I’m seldom bored, in fact 24 hours in a day is not enough to do all the things I like. It’s a pity I need sleep :)

    How about another hobby or something or work out more or pick up a study?

    LOVE the video on mommy’s blog. You rock!! Why can’t you walk in the rain? Get yourself a good umbrella and GO!! You’ll be so glad you did! It’s not cold out, just wet. I LOVE LOVE LOVE walking in the rain. Get yourself out there. NOW!! :)

    @Fran
    I am in between jobs. :) I will be doing something in about a month, but for now I am without work and that gives me a LOT of free time. I love the days where I am too busy to fit everything into a day. I like being busy. So this is rare and kind of weird for me. I’m thinking about picking up a hobby, but not sure what it will be. And I am working out more, but my body can only take so much before it needs rest. And leaves many hours in the day, hehe.

    @Amy
    I would love to listen to you, but I regret to inform you that your urgings are falling on deaf ears. I’m a fan of walking in the rain sometimes. However, I am not a fan of walking in rain that is pretty constant and interpersed with lightning, thunder, and tornado watches. If it was just light, fun, springtime rain then yes. But I don’t go for a stroll in possibly dangerous weather, no matter how much I need a workout.

    how about when you are watching TV everytime you see or you hear _______(fill in the blank) you do a sit up or push up or jumping jacks. Play that kinda game. I don’t know sounds fun. I hope this helps

    Love them push-ups!!! I am a push-up fan!!!!

    Can you walk the mall or another inside place or you can’t get there….. just something to keep you busy & moving?

    Want to come clean my house… I am SOOOOOOOOOO bad at that plus I get caught on this computer!! :-)

    Hope the weather clears up for you!! Do you do any workout DVD’s? Maybe having 1-2 for a “backup” rain plan would help? That way you don’t feel bad if your exercise plans get rained out?

    I hate push-ups… lol! But can now do 30 without falling on my face.. haha!!!

    It’s rainy here too. Luckily, I had made plans with a friend to write in a cafe, so we went there and wrote all afternoon, thus forcing me out of the house and away from the kitchen! And I only bought tea because I’m cheap and didn’t want to spend money on food when I’ve got food at home. Win-win all around :)

    Hope the rain goes away! Yuck!

    Good plan with the walking… I know how you feel w/o a car but it’s actually fun because you discover cool stuff along the way!

    Rain can definitely put a damper on stuff. Does that TV have any exercise on demand? I would give anything for a little boredom lately! ;-) I love to quilt and scrapbook and would give anything for a few hours to indulge in those!

    I have a treadmill so I don’t have to depend on the weather. We’ve had a lot of rain and thunderstorms lately, too. It’s getting OLD, but at least it’s not drought conditions this year.

    Boredom gets me too. Especially when I was unemployed…It was so hard to find things to do away from the kitchen that didn’t include money. That’s why I used to knit a lot. Kept my hands busy.

    I hope the rain goes away soon!

    LOL love the video of you doing pushups in the middle of the conference room!
    If it’s just a day or two with the rain that you’re worried about, how about taking a good ole afternoon nap after you’re through with whatever else you have to do? (I’m showing signs of a cold and am thinking about getting some good rest this weekend so I got sleep on my mind :D Besides, rainy weather & hearing the pitter patter is perfect for naps)
    If it’s a whole month I’d say definitely find a new hobby! Or a short-term class you can take at a community college or YMCA?

    When I first moved to SF 3 yrs ago, I had no job, no $, didn’t know anyone, no car, no tv, no computer. I was SO BORED. While my roomies were away at work (they found jobs first) id use their computers. But most of the time I slept a lot or read, or went to the grocery store and cooked (which didn’t take long, cuz none of us had much $ to buy food lol). Being free the whole day is only fun when u have tons to do. Hope you get to the library! Oh and try http://www.digg.com its got a billion fun articles and videos on all sorts of stuff. (oh and I still get really bored sometimes it feels like I wanna climb the walls!..short attention span..)
