No Gym? No Prob… Um, No Workout.

July 16, 2009 by Mary

This week I’ve spent at my friend Jessica’s has been an interesting time.  I’ve remembered what it was like to live somewhere besides my house with my family.  I’ve been very good about eating healthy half the time and remembering to eat smaller portions all the time, except for a few unnecessary ice cream encounters.  Normally I can just brush ice cream off but these girls love it and they had my favorite flavor.  Ice cream party!

The one thing that has sucked this week is my exercise.  I had all the best intentions to workout every day that I was here.  I found that it didn’t happen without a car to drive to the gym.  Three days I planned to walk around dusk after the heat let up some.  All three times it rained.  I did one workout inside doing stairs, squats, lunges, pushups, situps.  But that was just once.  All the other days I managed to do nothing.  (Literally nothing, I watched a lot of tv.)

It seems that without a car or a gym to go to I let myself off the hook.  The girls I stayed with don’t exercise at all and I stuck with their schedule while staying here.  We ate ice cream, we stayed up late, we didn’t work out.  Basically we did the opposite of everything I like to do.  I’ve managed to lose weight while staying here, but I don’t feel good about it.  I feel stiff and bored and ready to get moving.  I know it is my own fault for not being proactive and just working out at home but I honestly had no motivation for that.

Enter last night’s text message.

Bring clothes to workout in for tomorrow night.  We’re going to my gym.

The girl I am staying with in Chatanooga is apparently my workout savior.  She is taking me to a gym!  A gym!  She is also giving me no chance at all to get out of it.  There is no way I can’t go to the gym, not that I would want to skip out.  I’m excited to go play with weights and do elliptical cardio!

I know that next week I will be better about this slacker thing.  I won’t let workouts slip by me every day because I can’t.  I’m starting the Couch 2 5k (gonna try the running thing again!) with FLG, Wildfluffysheep and LFPE (Kitteh).  There are also some twitter peeps, Embarassed Fatty and Liz who has already started, that will be joining us.  If you want to do it with us too you can, just let me know!  We start Monday. I won’t have any reason not to go outside and get those workouts done, so I will do them, promise.

I’ll be on the road most of tomorrow and at a wedding Saturday.  Probably won’t post again until after that and hopefully with pictures.  Hope everyone has a wonderful weekend!  Get some exercise in!

Okay so I know you’re supposed to be “good” and workout and all, but I do envy your youth and carefree days…”We ate ice cream, we stayed up late, we didn’t work out. ” Ahh, so long ago! Have a great weekend!

Working out becomes its own addiction, and we don’t feel quite right unless we get it in. Personally, I think that’s a great thing. Glad you’re getting your sweat on….

Don’t stress it….just get back to what you need to do when you can. And in the meantime, thank the workout savior and make the best decisions that you possibly can!

It’s interesting that now you want to work out, and even though it didn’t all work out the way you wanted it to, you are missing the exercise! I think that’s a great sign of progress, and congrats on the weight loss!

Good luck with your running program and try to remember this when you want to go running and it rains: just go! Its really nicer to run in the rain then when its hot! Much more oxygen in the air!

Have fun at the wedding Saturday!

    @Fran
I will run in the rain, just not thunder and lightening, which is what we had. It wasn’t safe. Our power even went out briefly.

It’s really easy to be lazy and a couch potato and hang out with friends. Sounds like a fun time, with ice cream party and staying up late (I always stay up late… and do plenty of nothingness lol). You should post up a photo or 2 of you going to the wedding! Have fun there! When I was between jobs and had no $ for a gym membership the other year I never ended up working out at home. I felt so bleh and missed it so much, but I was still lazy for a few months, so I don’t blame you for not going when you had no car.

I think it is great to just hang with friends at times & like Diane said, good that you still missed & wanted to work out. You have lost weight too which is a sign you are watching your food & what you do to some extent, right!

Like merri said, if the rain is not too bad, you can get running clothes specific for the rain if you are up to that. The other thing I do is not to give in every time a friend wants to eat a certain way. Nothing wrong with enjoying but I just choose to do it when I want to whether others are doing it or not. You have to go with what is right for you especially during this weight losing stage. When I was losing weight, I tried not to get away from my personal program for more than a day or two, although I was not perfect all the time :-) , so that I kept up the consistency.

I think you are doing great & you recognize what is going on & working to change it so that is great! Hope you enjoyed the gym!

get to the gym girly. woohoo. i know its sometimes hard to break away from other peoples schedules when you are staying with ppl. its easier to go with the flow. so dont be too tough on yourself.

i wanted to go walking but we have torrential downpours here :( so looks like a wii workout for me.

C25K is a great program – you’re going to love it! I have always found that having a schedule to follow keeps me motivated and increases my follow-through. I hope it’s the same with you as well. I look forward to following your progress!
