Happy one month, Penny! We recently took our one month old photos and filmed a little update on life for both of us.
These memories are so precious and so fleeting, I’m happy to be doing these monthly updates. They are as much for my own memory as anything, though I know a lot of family and friends (and internet friends) enjoy watching the updates as well. I want to remember how little she was and how she acted as this age. It seems to change so quickly!
A few one month old highlights:
Baby’s Eating Habits
In the beginning we had a rough time with breastfeeding. She latched well but she kept losing weight despite always wanting to eat and I couldn’t figure out why. We visited a lactation consultant at 2 weeks when I had a mental breakdown over feeding her one day. I knew something was wrong but couldn’t pinpoint what it was on my own.
Turned out Penny doesn’t suck very strong or very long and she wasn’t getting enough food from me. The lactation consultant thinks because of this I didn’t make enough milk to keep up so between us we weren’t getting her fed well. We started supplementing what I do make with formula and she has been growing like a weed since then. It’s crazy to see how much twoish pounds over her birth weight make her seem so huge at one month!
Eating wise when she’s using formula we have been using Similac Pro-Sensitive and Medela breastmilk bottles with slow flow nipples. This combination seems to work the best for feeding either pumped milk or formula to her. She eats more quickly than breastfeeding but this combination slows her down compared to other bottles we tried out.
Baby’s Sleeping Habits
Baby girl is finally sleeping pretty well after she originally had her days and nights completely mixed up. That was really rough the first week or two (in addition to my insomnia that kicked in once I came home from the hospital). She now sleeps well at night and will sleep for anywhere from 3 to 5 hours at a time and generally sleeps from 9 or 10 pm to 8 or 9 am.
She’s doing ok with her naps. Some days we do really well – she is awake for an hour max and then naps, rinse and repeat. Other days she fights sleep and gets overtired and fussy and then can’t fall asleep no matter what tricks we pull out. Overall we have more good days than bad now at 4 weeks and since she sleeps so well at night and I’m relatively well rested it’s not too bad if she has a bad nap day.
Baby’s Developmental Milestones
She has done a couple real smiles in response to us making faces at her. It was super exciting to see this rather than just gas smiles. I’ll admit to both of us tearing up in response to smiles that were obviously meant as a response to us… it was so sweet!
Penny finally loves her swing and swinging in it. She started using it happily right before turning one month old and has continued for the most part. Sometimes she doesn’t want to swing but most of the time now she loves it and will even fall asleep in the swing.
She’s very alert when she is awake. She has long periods of being very alert and focused on things going on around her. She loves looking at the ceiling fan and looking at our faces while she is awake. It’s so interesting to watch her learn about the world and react to things!
