Penny’s First Food | Baby Milestone

September 22, 2018 by Mary

I’ve always said blogging was partially to share my life and discoveries with others and partially just to record keep for my own benefit. Today’s video and memories are definitely the latter, but I hope others enjoy them as well.

Penny recently had her first bites of food with a spoon and it was a wonderful, fun memory for us.

Recently I decided it was time for Penny to try out food! I got out the spoons we received as a gift and washed them and put her in her high chair for the first time (the one I got for free!).

I had no expectations about how it would go and tried not to over-research the experience like I often can do. I read the instructions on the bottle of organic rice cereal we bought, prepared it, and just went for it!

She seemed to love it even though rice cereal isn’t the tastiest of foods. I think she loved the spoon the most. She kept reaching for it to grab it away from me and play with it as a toy.

She took pretty well to the concept of eating from the spoon! At first she didn’t quite understand a lot fell onto her bib but by the end she was gumming that spoon like she’s been eating that way forever.

Baby’s first reactions to food are always so fun! I can’t wait to see how she reacts to things that have actual flavors! Rice cereal is very bland and not quite appetizing in my opinion, but it was recommended by our pediatrician since it’s very low in possible allergies. Since Penny has already proven herself to have reactions to certain things we are erring on the safe side!

Next up we will be introducing “yellow vegetables” for babies. That means Penny is about to discover sweet potatoes, carrots, squash and more!

I’m hoping she loves veggies and I plan to stick to those for a while before introducing fruits. Each new item gets a few days of introduction and watching anyway so it’s going to be a nice long process of watching for reactions and learning what she enjoys eating.

Thanks for watching and sharing in this special memory with us!

My opinion – and my grandmother thought this too – fruit sets taste bud expectations up for sugar. (I think that is part of what has happened to society). So we think it is best to introduce fruit last. Non starch veggies, meat first. Then starch veggies, then fruit last. So we also do not do much juice, I saved it for special occasion. And when I did do juice, I diluted it by half with water. And our kids from very young, did water as their main beverage. And I have always done bottled water from a local distributor (not tap). They are still huge water drinkers. It is usually the only beverage I have in the house.

I agree and so does our pediatrician which is why fruit will be the very last thing introduced. Honestly there are so many vegetables that it will be months before fruit is even on the radar! I’m hoping to get her very used to green vegetables especially so she is a veggie lover for life. :)
