Podcasts & Exercise

I am going to start doing a lot more cardio soon… Boo!

I find lifting so much more fun and entertaining, but cardio is necessary. And it helps with little things like finishing another triathlon. I find it incredibly boring when done at the gym but right now that is what I’ve been doing thanks to weather and other things.

To make cardio at the gym less boring I decided to download some podcasts to listen to. (our gym TVs have no sound and the music they play repetitively gets old fast.) Since I dont know what i like regarding podcasts, I downloaded a bunch of different ones to try:

  • The Jillian Michaels Show
  • Underground Wellness
  • Ben Greenfield Fitness
  • Everyday Paleo: Paleo Talk
  • Suze Orman Show
  • Smart Passive Income
  • Dave Ramsey Show
  • This American Life
  • Coffee Break Spanish

I figure listening to one of each of those will take me a few workouts then I can download more if I like them. I picked a few from random areas of personal interest just to have a lot of variety. I’m sure at least a few will stick.

Do you listen to podcasts? Any suggestions for great podcasts to listen to during workouts?

I was just thinking about Suze Orman this morning. We must be on the same wavelength with regards to wanting to be more fiscally responsible! I love podcasts – must get some for walking.

Yep, I’ve been paying off debt and it’s a goal for 2012. Suze is awesome! :)

The treadmil can be torture! Try taking a class like zumba, step, or whatever your gym offers..

I do love classes, especially Zumba, but it doesn’t work with my schedule. Actually Zumba is only offered once a week at my gym but I wish it was more often!

I cannot imagine running at the gym – I love the fresh air, even in winter (although I have to be very careful, I catch colds like nobody’s business), and the sounds and sights. It never gets boring, not even if all I can do during the dark months is run up and down the streets for 30min instead of through the woods.

I prefer to be outside but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do (aka I don’t like cardio in the cold or rain because I catch colds or extreme heat/sun because I get sunburned and I don’t live in a good neighborhood to go when dark). I’m so sensitive. ;)

Why when I end up listening to it when you do anyway? :P

Thanks for the great idea!! Had no idea Joe Rogan had a podcast, was a comedian, only knew that he hosted Fear Factor! I feel like I have been living under a rock..

Mary – I listened to my first Jillian Michaels podcast today (while on the treadmill too!) & the beginning of the show was kind of weird because they were bantering about having 20 seconds of silence on a radio show (or well podcast) & it seemed to go on & on & on & somehow that task was converted into attaining your goals. It was the 12/16 podcast if I remember correctly. Other than that, I did enjoy the podcast!

Joe Rogan does a ton of stuff! He does Fear Factor, commentary for UFC fights and events/games, his podcast, stand up, etc. I had no idea he did all that but he seems to be all over the place.

I haven’t listened to Jillian’s podcast yet but I hope it goes well!

I love the Jillian Michaels Podcast! I think bantering at the beginning is funny, they do it every time, but I remember the episode that Angie is taking about with the 20 seconds of silence and that was really annoying. I haven’t found a ton of podcasts that I’m into because I get overwhelmed with the choices, so I’m excited to see some suggestions here!

I love Suze Orman. She definitely epitomizes smart, tough love!

I totally agree that lifting is waaaaaay more entertaining than cardio. I love to just focus on my workouts when I lift but I get soo bored doing cardio. I have to have something to watch or listen to!

I can’t listen to podcasts because I get distracted too easily. (I’ve tried to listen to some while working and I end up typing something I heard! HA!) Hope you get some good suggestions!

I don’t listen to pod casts, but there is a syndicated radio host named Dr. Joe Esposito who has his broadcasts archived on his web site. Vegan, natural health, etc ( he’s a chiropractor). If you google “Dr. Joe”, you can find his site.

    Love your blog!

I’ve actually never listened to a podcast but I’ve always wanted to. The only podcast I ever downloaded was the podrunner podcasts for my workout music but I don’t think that’s the same thing because it’s just interval workout music. They’re still awesome, though!

Years and years ago when I was a podcast host, I used to listen to other podcasts. There was one I really liked but can’t remember what it was called. They stopped podcasting around the same time I did, but they might stay up, if i remember I’ll let u know. Personally, when I workout I have to have music. i LOVE fridays because i get to spend 40 min on the eliptical with my ipod blasting it’s SO FUN. But then again, i really enjoy cardio.

I am a huge huge fan of Dan Savage’s Savage Love Cast. If you’re more on the conservative side of, well, everything, please be warned that it might offend you deeply in ways you never dreamed. I personally think its awesome. :p

Hi Mary! First time writing here, I’ve been enjoying your posts. I, too, moved across the world (to Australia) with my Kiwi boyfriend. I’ve been doing mostly cardio since my friend gave me his Insanity workout DVDs and they are quite challenging, and on days when I do the treadmill, I also try to mix it up with podcasts, books on tape, and dance playlists. Would you consider doing books on tape? The plus side is that if you really get into the book, you will be constantly looking forward to the next cardio workout. Nat

I have never listened to a podcast but only because I don’t know how to download them. All of your podcasts look interesting and I am sure they will help pass the time. I don’t like to do cardio much, the time seems to drag at times. I much prefer the machines. The free weights intimidate me for some reason.

Hey Mary, I live by The Jillian Michaels show – I listen to them every week, they’re really good and entertaining as well, even the ones with content you wouldnt think would directly apply to you. I totally recommend!!
I’m the opposite of you, I’m a cardio junkie and have trouble with resistance :)

I second Savage Love. His podcast is the only one I listen to religiously. I don’t know your political or social leanings so to echo Lily Fluffbottom’s warning, if you’re conservative, he might not be for you.

But Dan Savage will definitely make you LOL in the gym.

Hi Mary, I think this is the first time I’ve commented, but I enjoy reading your blog. Just wanted to add a podcast recommendation – Wait Wait… Don’t Tell Me! It is hilarious and will definitely keep you entertained at the gym.
