Should the Weather Affect Workout Plans?

October 28, 2009 by Mary

This post may contain affiliate links. Please read my disclosure for details.

Rainy DaysWhen I woke up this morning I heard the raindrops.  When I looked outside my worst fears were confirmed: it was raining. Crrrrap.

Today I had planned to do every single activity possible.  That has now changed because of the rain.  Maybe I am being a baby, but I don’t want to go for an hour long walk in the rain.  I hate getting wet.  I hate being wet and sitting in a car for a thirty minute ride.  I hate having all wet clothes I have to change before I can do anything else.  I just hate the rain.  (Why I ever wanted/want to move to Portland is beyond me.)

Should the weather change your workout plans?  Should a little bit of rain stop you from getting some exercise? Probably not.

But does it?

In my case yes.

Instead I will lie around a bit and then hopefully talk myself into going to visit the elliptical machine on my own.  I’m far less motivated to go do that but I know I need to.  [Update :  Turns out I was plenty motivated and did an awesome interval workout on the elliptical!]

So while I’m giving myself a the-rain-ruined-my-plans-but-I-still-need-to-workout-so-I-can-be-healthy pep talk, you go check out my post today at A Weight Lifted about self-acceptance as the first step to losing weight and becoming healthy.

Oh yeah, and leave me a comment with some motivation to get over my rain hating ways.  Or tell me that you hate the weather too when it ruins all your plans.

I’d say it depends. I’m up against that today. I’d planned to go to the gym and do a cardio and a strength training regiment today… and woke up to freezing rain that’s now turned over to snow. Here in Albuquerque they don’t salt the roads, and since we usually don’t get snow until January they aren’t ready with sand, either. Right now the roads are all black ice… and many New Mexicans just aren’t used to driving on the stuff. I’m staying home.

I’m thinking about doing a dance workout, but know my motivation isn’t as good at home as it is in the gym, so we’ll see how well that works out.

You’re smart to stay in, Mary. You’d melt if you got out there and hiked in the rain. It’ll kill you dead. (Wait… that wasn’t sarcastic enough) IT’D BE THE WORST TRAGEDY YOU EVER FACED! (Wait… too sarcastic) It’d make you have to change clothes (Hmmmm… now my sarcasm meter has played out and I have no idea what level of sarcasm I’m at…. dammit!).

Oh well… have a great day anywho.

Weather sucks here too. But me thinks I’ll visit the office stairwell. Yes dahhh-ling. I’m feeling better.

    @JackSht
    SHUT UP!!! Haha.

I switched the rainy walk where I would have been miserable and not worked hard for a freakin hard elliptical interval workout. I think it worked out for the best. :)

But you are right… rain wouldn’t kill me.

I hate the rain/snow because I run outside with my Golden Retriever when it’s nice and sunny. And I hate dreadmills too (boring…) so I usually end up out in the rain running because I feel like he needs his exercise which leads to me having to exercise.

I do turn on the heat much higher than normal so when I come back inside I thaw out quickly.

I really hate doing it but once I’m out there, finish my run and get back it’s over and I can move on with the day…

Lol…I didn’t know the weather affected other people as much as it did me.

Glad to see you got a good elliptical workout in despite the gloomy day! I’ve been doing most of my workout a the gym, so the weather hasn’t really come into play yet that much for me. Once I get to where I’m walking and running outdoors though, I’m sure it will….especially during rainy season…it rains everyday during the summer here. (Florida)

It is so hard to stay motivated and get moving when it is raining outside as allI want to do is sit on the couch with my blanket and watch an old movie. I have a box in my living room with two videos, hand weights, ball, etc. So at least when the weather gets crappy, I have options.

Glad to hear you got on the elliptical. I know its hard to get motivated but just think about how great it feels once its done.

I wouldn’t go out in the rain either. My hair gets a frightful mess.

Hey sweetie, we will be off in a few to take your brother to surgery, but it is not raining here, just thought I would throw that in, he is nervous and so pray for him. Tell Jack to take a hike, your attitude toward rain is about the same as anyone’s would be when you are in such a beautiful place and walking on a beautiful day opposed to a rainy day, well there is a lot of difference. I love you and miss you especially on days like today.

I always stick with my workout schedule if it’s raining, I just wear a hat and try to remember to leave a big fluffy towel and robe near the front door. Then if it’s pouring, I can ditch my wet clothes as soon as I get in, and I also crank the heat if it’s cold so I’ll be warm when I get home. If it’s lightning out though, that’s a different story — I’ll stay inside and do stairs or jump rope. But since I am not made of sugar, I go in the rain, I just don’t like it.

I go out if it is not crazy rain but soft & not too crazed BUT I also have the gym & I go there if it is too bad on my outside day workouts. Hey, the great part of this is that you chose to do something no matter what & you had a good one! Even if you don’t want to go outside, there are always other alternatives.. that is the great thing & you did it!!!!! Congrats!

I hate wet feet the most!!

Weather not the problem so much, but darkness. I hate waking up when it’s still dark to exercise. I hate to exercise after supper when it’s dark again. Doesn’t leave a whole heck of a lot of time. Today, it was during naptime.

I don’t like it when it rains either, and it ruins my plans. But I probably don’t like the cold weather even more. That makes it harder for me to exercise. Sometimes it is nice to walk in a nice rain (if it’s not too cold!)

I’m not a big fan of rain and snow, and we’ve had a lot of rain today in New York. It’s chilly outside, and sooooo not fun to be outside. I don’t always feel like dragging myself to the gym, but I did it early so I could enjoy the fact that I wouldn’t have to go out to exercise later. :)

Now I’m home making a totally healthy and yummy dinner. I’ll ride my recumbent bike later too — the ‘no reason to ever skip exercising cycle’ that I got for days like these. :)

It’s awesome to know that you had a great time on the elliptical today..way to go!

If you walk in the rain then sit in your wet clothes in the car, all in chilly new england fall weather, you could catch a cold. So in the end, youre more unhealthy. I say, good decision! I work out in a gym so it doesn’t so much matter, although if it were torrential rain (which is almost never) I might perhaps skip it, since I do have to walk to the gym and back!

Mary, I don’t mind the rain so much, but cold rain is a different story. I have a real problem getting motivated to walk in cold rain.

    Hi Merry Mary:

Thanks for your comment on my local living posts. I’m glad you stumbled over my blog because yours looks great and the Green Mountain one also looks good.

I think I have at least one more in the local living “series” but maybe not next. .. please come back anyway.

I do walk in all weather except thunderstorms and rain so hard I can’t see where I’m going. I just make myself do it. Perhaps if I had a treadmill or gym access it would be different for me.

I live in tropical climate and we are now in the rainy season. I love to jog and find myself like you, not going to jog because it looks like rain or it is spinkling. Then I tell myself it could be a whole lot worse, it could be 100+ degrees out there. So I go anyway and get wet. I just put on a hat to try to keep the rain out of my eyes. Most of the time, I actually get a better workout because it is cooler and I am a little more motivated to get through and get out of the rain.

However, if it is lightning and thundering, I won’t go.

There are so many great workouts you can do from the comfort of your home, there really is no excuse not to exercise. There are hundreds of exercises listed on Holosfitness.com that you can do at home, in a hotel room, or even on a plane. Its often important to mix up your routine and not rely on going to a gym or exercising outside, add some spice into your routine.
