Sometimes

February 9, 2011 by Mary

This post may contain affiliate links. Please read my disclosure for details.

Sometimes you don’t want to count calories for the day. So you watch your portion sizes and choose lots of veggies.

Sometimes you don’t feel like cooking a healthy dinner. So you buy a prepared salad to eat.

Sometimes it snows when you want run outside. So you go run on the treadmill at the gym.

Sometimes you don’t feel like going to the gym. So you choose to do a workout DVD at home.

Sometimes things don’t work out like you think they will. So you make another choice. You keep moving. Always moving closer to your goal.

There isn’t one right thing to do. There isn’t one right answer. There isn’t one right way to go about being healthy. There are a lot of options. There are a lot of ways to eat better and a lot of ways to get exercise in. If your planned healthy choice doesn’t work out, please don’t use that as an excuse to do nothing. Make another choice.

Don’t worry about whether or not your choice is the best one. The best choice is the one that moves you closer to your goal at that moment. When things don’t go as planned or you don’t know what to do – just choose something. Make one healthy choice. And then another. It adds up.

Another announcement that I shared first via Facebook:

I’m a POLAR Brand Ambassador!

Yay! I have to admit I never thought that I would be saying that. Yet here I am, a triathlete and since I’ve been using a heart rate monitor I realized how amazing and useful they are both for triathlon training and just for exercise in general. I already talk about them all the time so it’s a perfect fit. I can’t wait to share more about POLAR products and bring you some awesome future giveaways and discounts (yay for me and for YOU!).

You don’t always HAVE to be “good.” Sometimes you need to just NOT count calories and go out to dinner, eat a bunch of Mexican food and not worry about it. I call those moments “resets”. I need a reset about every few months. I take a break for a day–or three–from counting calories or monitoring what I eat and just live.

Well said. There is definitely no one right way & just because the ‘perfect’ plan doesn’t go as planned its no excuse to throw in the towel altogether. We can find another option to move us toward our goal.
Congrats on the ambassador thing! That’s awesome. I know I love my Polar… wanting to upgrade soon though. :)

Exactly! That’s what this was about. Maybe things don’t go perfectly but that doesn’t mean you should give up.

      Thanks Polar is pretty awesome!

Wonderful post. So true. I try to remind myself to live like this every day – to make healthy substitutions when I don’t feel like following my initial plan.

I love this and have finally learned it, too. It’s not “all or nothing.” It’s making the best choice we can at the moment. And sometimes the best choice may not look like the “right” choice to the outside. Last week I had pie and ice cream when my son and I were out to our favorite spot for dinner. I think it was right. It was allowing a little balance. It was showing my 11 year old about moderation and how life isn’t all or nothing. And in the worse case scenario, I think if you really don’t make a good choice it’s okay. Wait about 30 seconds and a new opportunity to choose something will present itself and you can try again. :-) (This is one of my most favorite topics, right here!)

That’s taken me a long time to figure our and get over that all or nothing mentality. It’s the current choice that counts, not the last one.

I think pie and ice cream sounds great! But I’m all about moderation. Or trying to be at least. Still working on it. ;)

Congrats on the ambassador-ship (if thats a word…) :) And yeah, sometimes it’s not about being perfect, but being good enough!

That is such a great insight. Where there’s a will there is always a way.

Amen to this. As long as you are working towards your goal, you are doing the right thing. I was just saying this. Thanks for sharing.

I totally agree Mary! Healthy goals are all about momentum for me so if I can make a different choice that’s still in line with my goal, I am less likely to fall off the wagon. I know that for me, I need some flexibility to sustain a goal, but I also know it’s hard for me to get back my discipline if I let it wain for more than a couple of days maximum.

Oh you sound like my gym class teachers. If you can’t keep up, keep moving or go at your own pace..anything BUT doing nothing!

Polar heart rate monitors are awesome! End of story! Congrats!
I won mine last year in a Jillian Michaels contest. I love not having to guess if I burned enough calories for the day. I love knowing my heart rate. When I first got mine, I learned even though I *thought* I was working out really hard, I had to kick it up a notch as my heart rate was a tad out of the optimal zone. lol

Exactly! Polar heart rate monitors are awesome and totally helped me actually work out so that I’m doing enough. I too was victim to thinking I was working hard but not really working hard.
