Squats as Money: Moscow Subway Ticket Machine Accepts 30 Squats as Payment

I logged into Tumblr last night and was directed to this YouTube video showings a Moscow subway station that has a ticket machine that accepts 30 squats as payment.

Watch the video below, it’s pretty cool!

I obviously don’t understand Russian but the idea make sense. From the YouTube video description: “As part of a Russian campaign to make citizens healthier, riders who buy a ticket at Vystavochnaya station in western Moscow have the option of paying in squats.”

In the video you see a lot of people doing it just for the novelty and a lot more people just watching because it’s not something you see often. It’s definitely a neat alternative that not everyone would use but it does raise awareness of the need to exercise and get fit.

This kind of innovative idea is something that would be awesome to see in other places where there is a commitment to creating a healthier population.

Of course I had to just test out the concept and do 30 squats to make sure I’d qualify. It’s actually the perfect amount to do in one go – elevates the heart a bit but not too many that you get tired. I’d be all for doing this to get a subway ticket (when I visit cities with a subway that is)!

What do you think of this idea? Would you offer up squats for payment?

I think that is fantastic even if it is a novelty item only. Makes you think about what else you would do to get something like that for free. Jumping jacks? sit ups? a little run? :)

Absolutely genius idea. 30 squats is a great incentive because it is quite challenging but not so much that people will ‘shrug’ it off and pay instead.

I would totally do this! But as a regular subway commuter I can’t imagine how it would slow things down in the morning.
By chance my boyfriend is in Moscow this week for work so I sent this to him and he’s going to try to find it tomorrow. I will let you know what he finds.
