Triathlon Training, Take Two

November 15, 2011 by Mary

As I mentioned on Friday, I’m going to train for a triathlon again.

Contact TriWoman Series Point Chevalier Triathlon

I’m really, really into strength training right now and love it so I’m not giving that up. I’m just going to add in triathlon training and work around it. I feel like this is possible because I’m doing a short triathlon. In fact, I’m doing the same triathlon I did before!

Contact TriWoman Series Point Chevalier Triathlon

triathlonI learned a lot at my first triathlon. It was a great experience and I’m happy to repeat it and push myself to do better.

Last time I finished 106 out of 123. I know I can do better than that.

Last time I finished at 1:01. I know I can do better than that.

I felt so proud of myself when I finished the first time but I know that I can still do a lot better than I did. I want to do it again and improve my time. I want to feel that awesome feeling again when finishing.

The race is in April 2012. In fact, it’s on my birthday. That is actually what sealed the deal for me. I love having fun and memorable birthdays and I think a triathlon on my 26th birthday would be perfect.

I have over 5 months to train which is great because cardio and running wise I’m way behind. Right now I don’t plan to follow a strict training plan but instead just want to work on my cardio. In a couple months I’ll follow more of a plan and do brick workouts and all that. For now I’m just focusing on cardio. I started yesterday riding a bike at the gym. I’m going to start riding my bike everywhere again (when this rain goes away) and I believe my bike portion of the race will once again be my easiest. Last time I passed 19 people! In the rain!

The biggest thing I will need to work on this time around is my running. The race is super short so it’s not even a 5k run distance but I still didn’t run the whole part last time. By the end I was just too tired and ran/walk to end. That slowed my time down a lot so this time I’m going to focus on running, even when tired, so I can finish the whole race sans walking.

It should be good. I’m excited!

What a fabulous idea Mary! What a perfect Birthday celebration to look forward to. It’s great to have a goal to works towards.

You are around the same age of my daughter. I was telling her about your wedding and how adorable it was. I want to show her your Wedding photos of the adorable back yard wedding you had.

Thanks! I’m glad I’m here with the warmer weather instead of freezing over there in the US!

I like the video too. I missed a bunch of stuff myself – I didn’t even know Father Ken was dancing or half the stuff he did! It was sooo funny and I’m really glad there was a video to show me that it happened. :)

    Love you!

Good luck! I find it hard to simply run a 5k, but hopefully some day, I’ll do it.

Congratulations. What a great goal. I hope your training goes well and you stay away from injuries. Best of luck in getting a PR on your birthday. That would be cool.

Wow, that’s SO awesome that you’re doing a triathlon on your Birthday! I’m also super jealous because I recently realized I can’t ever do a triathlon because I’ve dislocated my shoulder way too much (and swimming is just not an option). But I’m hoping to start training and run my first 5k before MY next Bday (in March). Good luck! This seems like a totally awesome and achievable goal.

Hi Mary, Good luck with your triathlon training, glad you have decided to do another one! You say you’re behind with your running but don’t worry, as you say you have plenty of time, but also if you are going to be doing a lot of cycling, some of this fitness will transfer to running. Also, the better your cycling, the less the bike section will take out of you on race day, so leaving you with more energy to spare for the run. If you want some training ideas we have some example plans on our website. Enjoy!
