I don’t know if I’ve mentioned it yet, but I’m going back to America for two months at the end of the month. USA Trip 2012 is happening after all, just not how I was hoping!
It wasn’t planned at all but I’m going back for work reasons (I still work for a memphis web design company) and will be staying in Memphis for two months. I’m both excited and bummed out for a variety of reasons but overall I think the trip will be great. At the very least I’ll get to take care of that changing my last name business!
However since I’m only going to be in Memphis for two months I’m not sure what I want to do regarding exercise. I don’t think I want to join a gym as I’m feeling very anti-gym right now soit wouldn’t be worth the expense. Here are the options I’m considering:
Temporary Memphis Fitness Options
- Biking and or walking to work. I’m going to be living 3 ish miles from my work and borrowing a bike from my boss. If I can find a safe route into downtown I’d love to bike to work. Or walk but that would take longer. ;)
- Workout DVDs. I have several including some that I actually really enjoy and know can kick my butt.
- YouTube Videos. Similar to DVDs these videos can get me working out on my own at home. Plus there are tons to choose from now.
- Gym visits. I could pay a couple dollars and just visit a local gym as a guest.
- Class visits. There are random fitness classes like Zumba held all over in community centers and churches. I could jump into one of these a couple times.
- Bootcamp class. This one is the most expensive option by far but I’m considering doing a twice weekly bootcamp class by the river. It’s close enough to my work to be possible and would help me really keep up my fitness level while not committing to too much.
What would you do in this situation?
Most likely I’ll probably use some or all of these and mix and match them. Two months isn’t too long but I don’t want to go into sedentary mode and lose my awesome fitness I built up with LiveFit. I like my muscles and still want to keep them while losing more weight.
I like these ideas because it will be something different. I seem to get bored of focusing on one fitness activity after a couple months so the change will be nice. So will being in the US again! I love living in the USA! :)
Mary – how exciting (and sad) that you are coming back for a visit. If you can tell me in which area you will be living, I might be able to help you with exercise options. There is a bike lane on part of Front St. now! I would like to try the bootcamp by the river, too, but it gets WAY too hot in the summer! Which months will you be in town?
Is there really? Sweet! I’ll be in Midtown around McClean somewhere and obviously working Downtown. I figured when I got there I could drive around a bit and scope out biking options from Midtown to Downtown. I know some people do this so it seems reasonable that I can too.
I’m thinking about doing River Workout because I know of Stacy from when I worked at the Y. She seems awesome and people always loved her class. I’ll be there for May and June so I could do the full 8 weeks of it. If you are interested we could both do it!
And any other idea you have would be great. :)
I love the idea of doing a bootcamp. For me I would proberly take this option so I couldn’t back out as easily :)
That’s what I was thinking too! I would probably sign up for the bootcamp as guaranteed exercise routine and then do a combination of all of the other no cost options for variety!
You guys are smart. It’s basically $10 a class for the bootcamp so I know if I paid for it there would be no way I’d skip it. Probably going to do this!
Aww when I saw the first couple of sentences I was hoping you’d say you were visiting somewhere around here =( Regardless though – exciting!!! I hope you find an option that works for you – when we were temporarily stationed in a different part of TX, we went the day-pass route and it wound up being really expensive =/ Lots of gyms charge $5-$10 for a guest pass that may be anywhere from 1 to 10 days so it adds up quick!
I wish!!!
Yeah the daily pass can add up quick. That’s the route I’m actually least likely to go, but still an option.
Yay! I like the bike to work option but there are all kinds of fun ways to incorporate exercise in there. I’m sure you’ll find something that works for you!
Looks Like your going to be busy,
Don’t forget to think about your health?
A strong immune system keeps your body in top shape without the gym by giving you more energy, mental focus (don’t we all need that)? Not to mention keeping you out of the hospital, now there’s an expense to avoid. So save your gym fees and INVEST in yourself.

Visited your blog for the first time today! Right now in Tennessee the weather is great. Not sure when you’re going to Memphis but it’s very pleasant to be outside so you shouldn’t have any issues going on walks.
yay for you getting to visit the US. if it were me, i guess i’d do the workout at home/workout video route, only cuz i would hate bootcamps and being yelled at. but i think if i liked bootcamps, and it seems you do, then i’d do that. or both.
I think you should just bike to work since you have to get there somehow anyway. You’d get exercise & sightseeing in one trip. Getting fresh air & seeing interesting things beats the heck out of sitting in traffic. And you don’t have to bike everyday, you can just do it 2 or 3 times a week and do something else the other days, like take a walk.
Check out Groupon for memphis! I have bought about 6 months worth of bootcamps and they only end up being $30 a month or so. I have found some AWESOME bootcamps this way and it is sooo much cheaper than the usual $200 a month that bootcamps cost!
