Weigh In: Cold and Sickly

August 25, 2010 by Mary

This post may contain affiliate links. Please read my disclosure for details.

Thanks for all the comments on my gym search post! There really wasn’t a question about which gym I’m joining. I knew I was going to join Gym #2 the minute I walked out of there, but a girl has to have something to blog about, ya know? ;) Thanks for supporting the decision I made.  Posts where everyone agrees with me are fun! I should try for those more often. ;)

This week’s weigh in is a bit sad – I am all sickly!

Weigh In:

Current Weight: 206.1 lbs
Previous Weight: 206.6 lbs
Weight Loss: – .5 lbs
Weight Loss Total: – 44.9 lbs
Starting Weight: 251

You’ve got to be kidding me. 206.1? Seriously? I’m .1 pounds away from that 45 lbs lost mark so I can’t really claim it this week.  Just another half a pound gone. So basically maintained, with my body refusing to get to the next five pound mark technically. But that’s actually for the best because I said I’d do videos every five pounds and I’m currently sick so that would be a horrible video. Consider yourselves saved by the weight loss gods.

Goals From Last Week:

Goal #1: Drink more water!  – Did well on this on weekdays but didn’t do so well on the weekend when we were out and about doing stuff. Apparently I need to take my water bottle with me even when I leave the house and I haven’t been doing that. Water + weight loss go together!

Goal #2: Visit a gym. – Done. Visited two gyms. Have a pass to try out both and will do when I’m feeling up to it. So maybe a day or two and I’ll go visit.

Goal #3: Hit the 45 lbs lost mark. – Didn’t hit this technically, but if you wanna round up…. haha. This is why I NEVER set weight loss goals with a timeline.

Goals For This Week:

Goal #1: Get better! Being sick is no fun at all -I didn’t get to go on a field trip to the zoo today because I caught this cold.

Goal #2: Workout at the gyms I visited and join gym #2. – Not sure yet how I will squeeze the money for it without screwing myself over next month, but I’m making this happen by Monday. Monday will be the day of the gym!

Goal #3:  Make at least two new meals this week. – I would like to make a couple new things so I get more comfortable in kitchen here. Plus trying new recipes is just fun!

So what did I learn from this week? Don’t set weight loss goals for a certain timeframe. It never works out for me.  Also? Don’t get sick because it’s no fun and messes up your entire week! I can’t wait til I feel better.

What do you do when you have a cold? How do you get better quickly? Any tips?

Poor you! Feeling sick is awful – so lots of extra fluids to a) get rid of the bug and b) get down under the 45lbs lost mark. Go you!

Boo to sickness :( Try to rest as much as possible and eat well. Hope you’re better soon!

Btw, rounding up sounds right to me :D

Oh no, you look like one unhappy camper, you poor thing! Congrats on the loss though. Hope you feel better soon. My advice is get lots of sleep, and remember that spring is almost here! :-)

Sorry to hear that you’re sweet. :( I get as much rest as possible and live of canned chicken noodle soup & OJ when I’m not feeling well.

Congrats on the loss, you’ll reach your goal next week!!

What a shame you caught a cold. I usually take extra Vitamin C, Alka Seltzer Cold medicine and try to get extra sleep.

    Hope you feel better soon.

Aww, what a sad little face! LOL Hope you feel better soon so you can fully enjoy your new gym! I must be the only person who actually feels better when I exercise while I have a cold. I don’t rip it up like a madwoman but I feel much worse when I’m laying around on the couch letting my head clog up. When I stand up and move whether walking, DVD’s, whatever, for that 45 minutes, I actually feel better and then just rest the remainder of the day.

    • Mary says

      August 25, 2010 at 4:28 pm

Sometimes that works for me too. But it’s so cold outside here I just don’t want to go outside and there isn’t enough space inside. But exercise can be nice. ;)

  8. Tina says

    August 25, 2010 at 8:34 am

To get better, I rest even when I don’t want to. Otherwise I end up out of commission longer than I would have been otherwise. Hope you feel better soon!

    And it’s still a loss…celebrate it! :)

    Awe, I don’t like “sad Mary”…

And you didn’t MAINTAIN – you LOST, girl! Considering all that’s going on in your life, I’d say that’s a great win for you.

    • Mary says

      August 25, 2010 at 4:29 pm

I guess I just consider anything .5 pounds UP or UNDER to be a maintain. In my head that seems reasonable because I do go by decimals and my body can retain water over that amount.

Lots and lots of orange juice, chicken noodle soup, Emergen-C, Zicam, and Airborne! Rest rest rest!
    Feel better. :(

    August 25, 2010 at 10:38 am

I hope you feel better soon! Being sick is NEVER fun.

Question: Why do you measure your weight based on decimals? It seems like it is stressful. .1 pounds is such a LITTLE amount of weight,if you drink a glass of water, or go pee it could change that. The body fluctuates by ~2lbs a day. So I’m just curious (with no judgment!) why you go to the decimal… I know some people go by .5’s but I tend to round to the whole number.

    • Mary says

      August 25, 2010 at 4:33 pm

      Hey Amy!

I measure in decimals just because 1) that’s what the scale shows and 2) that’s what I’ve always done! In the beginning it was so excited to see any decimal of weight loss so I kept that and now it’s just habit. It’s just for my official weigh ins though. If you meet me and ask how much weight I’ve lost I do round up and would say 45 lbs. ;) The decimals really don’t stress me out but if they do for other people then definitely round up!

And personally my body fluctuates even more than that especially if I eat salt. Remember that post from the beginning of this week? I was up 4 lbs. A day later after drinking water and it was all gone and I was back to my real weight. So weight in itself is something that just doesn’t stress me out because I know how much it fluctuates and how much of a flawed measurement it is. ;)

Just getting over a case of Strep myself, so definitely second the suckiness of sickness. For a cold I recommend a ton of Vitamin C, lots of garlic and black pepper, preferably with the garlic and pepper contained inside chicken noodle soup. Hot and sour soup is another old friend for when the icky cold strikes. It always helps clear me up, at least for a little while. My doc recently recommended Afrin as well, and it works alright to dry up the nose anyway. Hope you feel better.

    • Mary says

      August 25, 2010 at 4:34 pm

What’s Afrin? We probably can’t even get it over here but I’m curious.

Hope you feel better soon! No fun!!! I hardly ever get sick, even a cold.. knock on wood which is my hard head! :-) Usually if I do get one, it is not bad & I am still off to the gym but listening to the bod… & I take plenty of Kleenex & antibacterial stuff!!!

I love your learning lessons!!! You are cute!

I missed your gym post so best check that out!

I am at the end of a long recovery from a cold. I hope you feel better soon! Here’s what I do when I get one.

#1 – Zinc. Zicam is my med of choice here, as they have some options that do not taste like crap and/or go in the nose instead of the mouth. Zinc lessens severity and shortens a cold.

    #2 – DayQuil/NyQuil. Love this stuff.

#3 – Ibuprofen. Relieves aching, which usually accompanies a cold for me.

#4 – Ice cream. For my throat.

I generally increase my caloric intake when I get sick. I feel like it helps me recover better and/or faster. It might be a misguided thought, but it really seems to work for me.

  23. Danielle says

    August 25, 2010 at 5:58 pm

I need to start carrying a water bottle with me on weekends. I’m great during the week when I’m at a desk and always have a cup of water and/or green tea beside me. Not so much when I’m at home.

As for being sick, rest is super important. Coderal is a great cold/flu medicine here in NZ. Plus lots of vitamin C and zinc. Hot water with fresh lemon juice, honey and ginger or garlic (depending on your preference) can be sipped to help soothe a sore throat.

I hope you feel better really soon! You’re on the right track with the fluids and rest.

And thank you for NOT going to the gym with a cold. Today, a guy at my gym was coughing all over the place. I blocked off my mat area so that he had to make a wide berth around it when he was moving around. (Not that he couldn’t have picked up the 40-lb. barbell with his pinkie, if he’d been so inclined. :))
