Last night for dinner I made a pita pizza! Actually it wasn’t on a pita, it was on a round flatbread, but it was great.
The pizza was tomato sauce, cheese, chicken, and jalapenos. I also roasted an assortment of veggies. Right now the only thing I can use in my kitchen is a toaster oven. That’s how this meal came about since I wanted something warm and easy in the toaster oven. It worked out pretty well!
I thought it might be interesting to share what’s in my kitchen right now. I went grocery shopping once to get myself a little bit of food for my new place. Here’s what I ended up getting:
- wheat pasta, brown rice, ramen noodles
- wheat bread, wheat tortillas, flatbread
- baked beans, black beans, kidney beans
- corn, sweet potatoes, white potatoes
- italian stewed tomatoes, kale, spring lettuce mix
- green and yellow peppers, onions, jalapenos
- chicken, ground turkey, turkey deli meat, tuna fish
- light mayo, low sugar ketchup, mustard
- tortilla chips, pepperoni, chicken stock
I missed a ton of things when shopping like butter and salt/peppe. Last night I realized I didn’t even have a can opener to open most of my food! I have since fixed that problem but I’m still stuck with a halfway functioning kitchen for now. Here’s hoping everything gets to working properly soon so I can make more meals at home.
I know this may sound weird… but you can get a lot of that stuff super cheap at thrift stores, on Craigs, and my best luck has been through Facebook. YES! Through Facebook. There are online garage sale groups on there and I’ve gotten soooo much stuff super cheap! Especially kitchen stuff. So, you might want to try finding one in your area and it will really help with setting up your new house and CHEAP! Also, you might want to try just driving around to some of the local thrift places. Many will leave extras outside for people to take. I got two amazing slipper chairs for FREE from my local one. I plan on having them recovered when my kids are older. But for now, they work great! Why were they rejected? ONE cushion on the bottom had a stain. Yeah, I just don’t care. LOL And a friend of mine dumpster dives (as long as no sign is posted) and gets stuff ALL THE TIME! She has some amazing free things from Pier 1 that they just threw away. Locally they sort of know her now and leave things out for her. LOL You may not want to go that far, but I went with her once and it’s sort of amazing how much perfectly good stuff gets thrown out.
Yup! Julie is so right! Check Craigslist and local Facebook groups- you can find great things. Also, check for your local Freecycle chapter. Everything through those MUST be given for free, and sometimes there’s some really good things to be had. I’ve also used Freecycle to unload a lot of stuff.
I didn’t even think about Facebook. Thanks for all these awesome ideas!
It’s exciting moving into a new place but takes time to get things sorted. You’ll be up and running full speed before you know it. That pizza looks really good by the way.
Restocking a completely new home is definitely hard! Good luck with everything :)
I love the idea of the make-shift pizza!
Wow your peeps had some good suggestions! I wish I lived closer, I donate stuff all the time not because the stuff is bad but we just don’t have room for it our pop squat house! If I come across anything good (I’m about to do another purge), I can email you with pics if you want.
Looks like a good stock up of food. I’ve been trying to buy staples so I can just spotaneously cook made up meals without needing a recipe.
That’s a great idea for flatbreads. I buy them often, but have never thought to make pizza!
